History of Manxx

The timeline below is since the colonization of Manxx until today (600 P.O.).

49 A.L.

As the legend has it, on Colbet the first cases of Sephian Plague were slowly appearing randomly and among other folk, the Rastockians were summoning every single available priest to cure the sick. One of the major clans in Rastock, the Argions decided to emigrate. Poor omens were foretelling a great dying and the fathers and mothers of the clan didn't want to risk their vassals lives. Various expeditions were sent out to look for a new suitable place. One of these expeditions made to hard journey to a distant empire called Catalania. Only few survived this trip and finally, over a year later, a ship landed in Port Serval, carrying only five adventurers, of which two died shortly upon arrival.

The three that survived travelled north to the capital of the Empire to ask for permission to immigrate. On their way there, at the southern tip of the Blue Suns Mountains, they crossed a large river (later to be called the Nicnaso River) and entered a large valley, cradled between the mountains. Almost immediately, they decided to call it their home.

However, their entering of the valley unleashed a power centuries old, and the expedition leader, Grork mysteriously dissapeared. The other two returned to Colbet with a grant from the Emperor and revealed their discovery.

47 A.L.

With the plague raging across the continent and fully out of control, the Argions and the Rastockians gathered as many of their people and valuables aboard 150 ships and set across the sea. Obviously, the hardships were enormous and with the ships hopelessly overloaded with people and goods, of the over 15,000 people who left Rastock, only 6000 arrived, on board 40 ships. From Port Serval, they travelled north towards the fabled valley, arriving there in the Spring of 45 A.L. With great support from the imperial government, they established their town of Manxx there and were given a full status of County in the Spring of the following year.

46 A.L.

Olcron Argion becomes head of the Argion Clan and Count of Manxx. Coal and iron mines are discovered in the north and Manxx begins starts producing and exporting steel.

40 A.L.

Gollrocks attack Manxx in the late summer, shortly before harvest and hold the town in siege for three weeks until finally beaten off. During their retreat, they burn most of the fields around Manxx. The following harsh winter worsens things for the inhabitants of Manxx and hundreds die of hunger although help is sent from the empire.

36 A.L.

The population of the County of Manxx reaches 10,000 inhabitants and the Empire grants additional land to the county which now stretches south until the Nicnaso river.

34 A.L.

A discussion with the neighboring county of Salfe Dorsa about trade routes leads to border skirmishes. Imperial troops intervene shortly before a full-scale war breaks out. Manxx closes the border to Salfe Dorsa.

32 A.L.

Olcron Argion steps down from his position as Count as Imperial matters call him to Catalania. He and his friend and general of the Manxxian troops Slamgon Olok leave Manxx. Olcron's sister, becomes Countess of Manxx.

Through mediation of the Empire, Manxx and Salfe Dorsa sign a peace treaty and Manxx reopens the borders to the neighboring county.

27 A.L.

Eredna Argion marries Sir Alan Bohfrey of Manxx, a member of a noble family of Catalania City. Sir Bohfrey and Eredna keep separate names and Eredna remains Countess. Alan Bohfrey becomes General of the Manxxian troops.

25 A.L.

The Three Stars Merchant Company establishes a trading post in Manxx. Located in the center of the continent, Manxx soon becomes a major trading route from the Capital to Leonce, Port Bengal, Destone and Plaintlan. The Manxxian population increases by a great amount of halflings, attracted by the Merchant Company.

22 A.L.

Olcron Argion and Slamgon Olok return to Manxx ten years after having left on request of the empire. Weathered and tired, they decline political and military positions. Olcron dedicates his time to studying magic and Slamgon Olok becomes a Paladin of Cattar.

21 A.L.

The Manxxians are woken one night to find a light shining out of the sky into the center of town. The Highpriest of Cattar to Manxx proclaims that a new entity has joined the Gods. Soon, the Manxxians find out that this entity is Grork, leader of the expedition who founded Manxx. A temple to Grork is established in the center of the town. Grork's faith is immediately established as the main religion of Manxx and becomes a very popular faith in Catalania. Manxxians often refer to this year as the Year of Grork.

16 A.L.

The population of Manxx exceeds 20,000 inhabitants with almost 4,000 halflings, making it one of the most densely populated halfling communities on the continent. Four thieves' guilds operate in town, legally. The crime rate is low, as most thieving guilds operate on trade. Nevertheless, the council of Manxx proposes the institutionalization of the guilds to avoid "a catastrophic expansion of crime as we know of in Pallassi" as Pantor Oran Gathop, member of the council and the Argion Clan and Paladin of the heathen god Primus states. Pantor is murdered by a member of the Argion Thieves' Guild. The ensuing fighting within the Argion Clan leads to the first break-up in the long history of the clan. 2,500 Manxxians emigrate to Port Serval and Pallassi, taking a large part of the Argion fortune along with them. From Port Serval, 300 try to return to Rastock on Colbet and die when their ships sink in a storm.

8 A.L.

Olcron Argion attemps The Test at the Gray Wizard Mountain under training of a new wizard in Catalania: Sirintal. Dying in the attempt, Olcron is proclaimed a Saint in Manxx.

4 A.L.

The Oblivion

As many other towns, Manxx is taken by Dark Felines swiftly and effectively from one moment to another. The ruling class manages to escape through the tower of Solthac to another plane. Alan and Eredna remain until the last moment, fighting the dark forces, but really have no chance and are taken captive. The Argion Palace is taken and used as an operating base for the southern Blue Sun Mountains. The mines in the north are imploded and the fields around Manxx are burned down. A large part of the population flees south, assuming it is safer there and are intercepted by a Dark Feline army. Hundreds are executed and the rest are placed in prison camps.

The dark felines soon impose a puppet government in Manxx to be able to concentrate on taking the other smaller towns in the southwest. Eredna and Alan are released and join a group of Argions which have returned. They investigate the appearance of an outer-planar rift in the mountains and, finding nothing proceed to the capital where they are taken captive and forced into a gladiator fight. Two members of the group are killed in combat and the Bohfreys are allowed leave.

Manxx remains under Dark Feline rule for almost the full oblivion. The dark felines retreat from Manxx only early in the tenth year, receiving a call to go to the Blue Sun Mountains. Manxx is devastated: Most buildings are destroyed, the town walls are torn down and the fields are barren and dry to due almost a decade of neglect. The first year of freedom is a hard one and once again a harsh winter worsens the conditions. The population of the county of Manxx, near 25,000 shortly before The Oblivion has been reduced to 15,000.

Diamond mines are discovered in the north. The exploitation begins immediately.

153 P.O.

Following the diamond mines, workers strike upon an air pocket. A group of elite soldiers are sent in to explore the cave and don't return. A second group enters and doesn't return either. Finally, a small group of Argion Clan members decide to investigate the cause. One of the six returns after four months, scarred by fire, the symbol of Ramtal burned into his face. He states that a community of approximately 200 drow elves live below the surface and see the exploitation of the mines as an invasion.

The inner caverns of the mine are imploded upon decision of the Government and half of the mountain caves in with the strength of the magical spell. A permanent guardpost is set up outside the former mine.

Under heavy protests of Port Bengal, Salfe Dorsa, and Pallassi, Manxx declares a "0 Tax Year". The Imperial Government demands that Manxx nullify this offer but Manxx ignores the Imperial demand, claiming it has full internal autonomy. A full division of Black Stripes marches into Manxx and arrests forty prominent members of the Argion Clan. Three are sentenced to death on counts of treason.

264 P.O.

Manxx is allowed to retake full control of the county.

283 P.O.

With Lord Villarius declaration of the inferiority of non-human races, Manxx declares a state of emergency and calls all of age to join the militia. The Calliak Forest border becomes heavily manned and the Manxxians start first patrols (not-approved by the Empire) in the Calliak forest.

284 P.O.

The state of emergeny is lifted, as the Imperial government and the local Bengal government don't take the remark of Villarius seriously. A compulsory military service is declared, affecting all those of age for a full year. Protests from neighboring counties are not heard and the Argions speak of "necessary security reasons against the west".

297 P.O.

A Manxxian merchant company is assaulted in the Calliak Forest on it's way to the west coast. Seventy three members are slaughtered and burned. The symbol of Lagville is left etched into a tree.

A week after the slaughter, the symbol of Grork crumbles to dust in the Temple of Grork. It is replaced by the symbol of Gondor for over an hour. A official document from the Church of Gondor declares that these happenings are to "celebrate 200 years of treason in Manxx", referring to the destruction of the Temple of Gondor in 97. The Council of Manxx requests Bohfrey of Manxx to prohibit the establishment of "foul sects and evil beliefs" in Manxx. Bohfrey acknowledges but allows the establishment of a small shrine to Rax, on request of the Argion Thieves' Guild. An attempt to burn down the shrine is thwarted by an anonymous letter. The offender, the wife of one of the murdered merchants is sentenced to a long prison term but released after six months.

309 P.O.

The priestess of Torla in Manxx advises Bohfrey to intensify health controls on the eastern borders. She claims to have information that the sanitary conditions in Felineo and Pallassi are more the decreptic.

With the outbreak of the Dereltius Plague in Felineo, Pallassi and Cellesse, Manxx stops the import of all goods from these cities and their immigration. All people entering the county of Manxx and not being able to present a statement of the origin of their travel or those showing signs of sickness are quarantined in the Blue Sun Mountains in a heavy-guarded camp. None of the quarantined ever show signs of infection and not a single case of the plague appears in Manxx. The council praises the priestess of Torla for her wisdom and grant the construction of a park in the center of Manxx where the new temple of Torla will be. A few hundred people from surrounding counties flock to Manxx, having heard of the priestess.

325 P.O.

New arguments about trade between Salfe Dorsa and Manxx escalate to the movement of Salfe Dorsian troops to "strategic maneuvers" near the eastern road to Manxx.

326 P.O.

A caravan of 6 wagons is assaulted and plundered shortly outside on the east road. No caravan members survive. Salfe Dorsa is blamed, but the mountain county denies these claims.

In the fall, four-hundred Gollrocks overrun the eastern border post in Manxx, killing the guards there, attack miners at the iron mines, killing a large portions of those and head down the valley of Manxx towards the main town, killing and plundering everything in sight. By the time they have reached Manxxed, a militia has been summoned, but it is of no use. The Gollrocks invade the Town of Manxx, killing and plundering until reinforcements from the surrounding lands and Milina arrives. The Gollrocks are driven back to the mountains under great casualties. Two-thousand Manxxians lose their lives in the battles and damages to Manxx cannot be repaired immediately due to the arriving winter.

328 P.O.

Repeated Gollrock attacks lead to the construction of a fortress at the eastern road of Manxx, which also has the only passable mountain road into the valley. One-hundred soldiers are now to be stationed here at all times.

357 P.O.

382 P.O.

At the 204th Manxxian Wine festival, an earthquake rocks the Nicnaso Valley, causing great damage to the town of Tureth. Nobody is killed, although over 3,000 people are attending the festival. As most people are outside or in tents, damage remains mainly structural. The flow of the Nicnaso is slightly detoured, causing part of the wine in the valley to rot. The very small amount of wines produced that year and the seismological happening, make 382 Red Manxxian Wines rare and coveted.

388 P.O.

The second major census in Manxx counts 36,829 inhabitants, of which 17,281 are human, 6,122 halflings, and 4,133 feline. For the first time anywhere in the Empire, the halfling population exceeds the feline in a given area . The Town of Manxx accounts for 17,699 inhabitants and Milina for 4,210. Although the population has increased, this increase has been mainly rural. The Council of Manxx praises this change, as "Manxx is no longer suffocated by so many individuals in one place".

395 P.O.

Mercenaries attempt various short attacks on the border town of Carspetia Siber at Manxxian Springs. These mercenaries, sent by Port Bengal set up border posts near Manxxian Springs.

400 P.O.

Border skirmishes at the Calliak with the Bengalian mercenaries increase in frequency and three years later a succession of eccesions occur. First the Militocracy of the Snar declares independence, followed by Port Serval and Armington. Others follow the example, with the Nation of Freemen along. The Emperor is executed and thus cries from Manxx to envoy troops as defence to the small county fall on death ears and once again, Manxx remaining loyal to the now-chaotic Empire, declares a state of emergency and the only trade route which remains open is the southern one to Port Serval ,where Imperial troops were treated with (some) respect when Port Serval declared independence.

3000 halflings emigrate to the east, fearing an attack by anti-non-human armies from the west. But with the secession of Vaelar and Balton, they return.

412 P.O.

Finally, Imperial troops are sent to Manxx. With the Nation of Freemen more than a menacing neighbor and the Calliak Forest no-man's-land, Mountain Rangers establish two larre garrisons: One outside of Manxx and the other outside of Milina. The arrival of the mountain rangers reestablishes some feeling of security in the county.

435 P.O.

The School of Magic is established in Manxx, which apart from training in magic, also teaches philosophy, physics, Catalanian and Rastockian history and metphysics. Fifteen students enroll the first year, all Argion Clan members.

439 P.O.

Eredna Bohfrey (ne้ Argion) dies of old age, all magical and medicinal prolongation mathods have no effect. At her death she is 473 years old, very respectable for a human. Her funarel is attended by thousands of Manxxians and high guests from the capital.

466 P.O.

After almost half a century of relative peace, Freemen troops invade the dominion, occupying Manxxian Springs and Milina. A full garnison of Imperial and Manxxian troops is slaughtered. Historians will argue in a hundred years whether this is the start of the series of Freemen Wars.

466-583 P.O.

Hundreds of skirmishes rock Manxx. Thousands emigrate fearing a takeover by Freemen. This doesn't happen but Manxx bleeds out, the Mines are closed, Wine production ceases and a strange disease kills off thousands of square kilometers of the Calliak Forest. Manxxian historians call this "A lost century".

591 P.O.

Rulster Norfolly spends a few months in Manxx, living in the underground. Freemen troops searching for him, invade the whole Dominion in the winter, marking the beginning of the Second Freemen Wars. Bohfreys, Argions and other nobles manage to flee, few other Manxxians have that opportunity. Manxx is razed and the Freemen troops march through on their way to the Capital. Rulster Norfolly is not found.

592 P.O.

Catalanian forces drive Freemen troops back into the Calliak forest, assisted by an elite guard of the Argions.

The Red Dragon Inn burns to the ground during the battle and is rebuilt later in the year.

594 P.O.

With the restitution of the Empire, Manxx swears allegiance to the Empire. The Manxxian population is feverishly rebuilding their dominion, aided by the funds of the Argion/Bohfrey Clans.

The Town Hall becomes seat of government and Rulster Norfolly's Bakery reopens.

595 P.O.

Levlan's "The Suns" is discovered in the wine cellar of a Manxxian home. It was stolen by Freemen troops during the raid of the capital. In a ceremony in Manxx it is returned to the Empire.

The Empire relocates 1500 troops to protect the borders around Manxx. They are stationed near the mines and patrol the Blue Sun Mountains. The Dominion of Manxx does not allow them to be stationed in the Calliak Forest. In a bitter argument in the capital between the Manxxian and Imperial representatives, the Manxxian is thrown out of the Palace.

599 P.O.

Before the turn of the century, Manxx and the Empire return to the negotiation table.

The first year of good wines marks a decade of "defeating evil".
